    Frequently Asked Questions

Is this webcam test safe and private?
Yes. The video stream is rendered locally in your browser using the standard getUserMedia API — it is never transmitted anywhere. Nothing is recorded or uploaded, and the snapshot download is generated on your device.
Why does the page ask for camera permission?
Browsers require your explicit consent before any site can see your camera. Click Allow when prompted. If you clicked Block by mistake, click the camera icon in the address bar to re-enable it, then reload.
The camera is allowed but I get "permission denied" — why?
Your operating system may be blocking the browser. On Windows go to Settings > Privacy & security > Camera and enable camera access for desktop apps. On macOS open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and tick your browser.
Why is my webcam showing a black screen?
Usually another app (Zoom, Teams, Skype, OBS) has grabbed the camera exclusively — close it and reload. Also check for a physical privacy shutter or a keyboard camera hotkey (e.g. Fn+F8/F10 on many laptops).
How do I select a different camera?
After the test starts, use the camera dropdown under the video — it lists every camera Windows/macOS can see. If a camera is missing, unplug and re-plug it or check USB and drivers in Device Manager.
The resolution or FPS is lower than my camera supports — why?
Try a higher preset (720p/1080p/4K). Some cameras only deliver high resolution over USB 3, and many drop FPS in low light because they lengthen exposure. Browser power saving can also cap the frame rate.
Can I test my camera before a Zoom, Teams or Meet call?
Yes — run this test first, then in Zoom use Settings > Video, in Teams Settings > Devices, and in Meet the camera icon in the meeting toolbar, and pick the same camera you verified here.
Does the test work on phones?
Yes — on Android and iOS it works in Chrome and Safari over HTTPS. Use the camera selector to flip between front and rear cameras.
Why does the test need HTTPS?
Browsers only expose camera access on secure (HTTPS) pages or localhost. If you run this page from a local file or plain HTTP address, the camera API will be unavailable by design.
