    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is this microphone test private?
Yes. Audio is analysed and recorded locally in your browser — nothing is streamed to a server. The 5-second recording lives only in the page until you download it or close the tab.
Why does the browser ask for microphone permission?
All browsers require consent before a page can hear you. Click Allow. If you blocked it, click the lock/tune icon left of the address bar, set Microphone to Allow, and reload.
Permission is allowed but still denied — what now?
The OS is blocking the browser. Windows: Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone — enable access and let desktop apps use it. macOS: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone — tick your browser.
Why is my mic quiet or inaudible?
Raise the input volume: Windows Settings > System > Sound > Input > Volume (and check the device's Additional device properties > Levels boost). Also move closer and make sure the right input is selected here and in your meeting app.
The test says "no sound" but my mic is plugged in — why?
Check the headset/inline mute switch and the Windows mute icon, confirm the correct device in the mic dropdown, and make sure no app like OBS or Discord has an exclusive lock on the mic.
How do I pick the right mic in Zoom, Teams or Meet?
In Zoom: Settings > Audio > Microphone. In Teams: Settings > Devices. In Meet: the mic/camera settings in the meeting preview. Choose the same device name this test shows as working.
What do echo cancellation and noise suppression do?
They are browser audio processing features that reduce room echo and fan/keyboard noise. Keep them on for calls; turn them off if your voice sounds muffled or robotic, or when recording music.
Can I use this before an interview or exam proctoring?
Yes — that is the ideal use. Run the test, speak, watch the meter move, record a sample and play it back. If the meter reacts and playback sounds clear, you are ready.
Why do I need to click before the test starts?
Browsers block mic access and audio contexts until you interact with the page — a click satisfies that rule and also makes sure you chose to test.
