320 kbps

Our highest bitrate setting — free, with no cap on how often you use it

Which Audio Quality Should You Choose?

A practical guide to bitrates — and the honest truth about quality ceilings.

Standard 128 kbps ~1 MB / min

Use for: Podcasts, speech, voice memos, lectures

Good enough for spoken content

Good 192 kbps ~1.4 MB / min

Use for: Casual music listening, playlists

Solid choice for most music

High 256 kbps ~1.9 MB / min

Use for: Music you listen to on good headphones

Excellent balance of size and quality

Best 320 kbps ~2.4 MB / min

Use for: Music, DJ sets, lossy source archiving

Best MP3 quality — no compounding artefacts

The honest truth about 320 kbps

YouTube streams audio at AAC 128 kbps for most videos (256 kbps for some). Selecting 320 kbps output does not create quality that was not in the original — it just means no additional compression loss during encoding.

How ToolsBear YouTube to MP3 Works

The Conversion Pipeline

  1. 1

    We read the link

The URL is checked to confirm it points at a public YouTube video or Short, and the video ID is pulled out of it.

  2. 2

    We look up the audio

YouTube is asked which audio-only streams exist for that video, along with its title, length and thumbnail. No picture data is requested at all.

  3. 3

    We pick the best stream

The highest-quality audio stream available for your chosen setting is selected, so the file is not put through a second round of compression on our side.

  4. 4

    Your browser downloads it

You receive a direct link to YouTube's content servers and the audio travels from there to your device. Nothing passes through ToolsBear, which is also why that link expires after about an hour.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Video not found error

Check the video is public, not age-restricted, and not a live stream. Private videos and members-only content cannot be converted.

The download link stopped working

Links issued by YouTube's servers expire after about an hour. Press "Refresh" beside the download button to get a fresh one — you do not need to start over.

Audio sounds distorted

Try a lower bitrate — some source streams have encoding issues that become more noticeable at high bitrates. 128 or 192 kbps is often cleaner.

Download fails on iPhone

Use Safari on iOS and hold the download button to choose "Download Linked File". Some third-party browsers on iOS block audio downloads.

Legal Considerations

Understanding what is and is not permitted when converting YouTube audio.

Generally Permitted

  • Content you own the copyright to
  • Videos licensed under Creative Commons
  • Public domain audio and historical recordings
  • Personal use copies in jurisdictions with fair use / fair dealing provisions
  • Educational use in many jurisdictions

Not Permitted

  • Redistributing copyrighted music you did not purchase
  • Uploading converted audio to other platforms without rights
  • Commercial use of copyrighted material without a licence
  • Circumventing YouTube Premium's offline download feature
  • Converting content to avoid buying it on streaming services

YouTube's Terms of Service prohibit downloading content without explicit permission. ToolsBear is a technical tool — responsibility for legal use rests with the user. When in doubt, check the licence of the content or contact the creator directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a YouTube video to MP3?

Paste the video URL in the box above and press "Get Audio". Once the title and thumbnail appear, choose a bitrate, answer the short human check, and press "Convert to MP3". A download button appears when the link is ready.

Which bitrate should I choose?

For speech — podcasts, lectures, interviews — 128 kbps is plenty and keeps the file small. For music, pick 320 kbps. The setting controls how much compression is applied on our side; it cannot exceed what the original upload contains.

Why do 128 kbps and 320 kbps sound almost identical?

Because both start from the same source. YouTube serves compressed audio, commonly around 128 kbps AAC, so a higher setting does not add detail that was never recorded. What it does do is avoid stacking a second round of compression on top of the first.

Does it work with YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste a Shorts link exactly as you would a normal video — both the /watch?v= and /shorts/ URL shapes are handled. There is also a dedicated Shorts to MP3 tool if that is all you need.

Is there a limit on how long the video can be?

There is no fixed cap, so full lectures and concert recordings are fine. Longer videos simply produce larger files, which take proportionally longer to transfer on a slow connection.

Do you keep a copy of the audio I download?

No, and we never even receive one. We look up the audio stream and give your browser a direct link to YouTube's content servers, so the file travels from them to you without passing through us.

Why did my download link stop working?

Links issued by YouTube's servers are time-limited and expire after roughly an hour. Press "Refresh" next to the download button to mint a new one — there is no need to paste the URL again.

Can I convert an entire playlist in one go?

Not from this page, which handles one video at a time. Use the YouTube Playlist Downloader instead, which is built for working through a full playlist.

What other formats can I get?

This page is for audio. If you want the video itself use the YouTube to MP4 tool, and for uncompressed audio for editing work use the YouTube to WAV tool. We do not currently offer FLAC or OPUS output.

Why does a particular video refuse to convert?

Almost always because it is not publicly available: private, unlisted, age-restricted, members-only and live videos cannot be read. A small number of videos are also blocked here because we received a valid copyright takedown notice for them.

Can I use this on iPhone or Android?

Yes — works in Safari, Chrome, and Firefox on iPhone, Android, and all other mobile devices. On iOS, tap and hold the download button and select "Download Linked File".

Is it legal to use this converter?

It depends on the material and on where you live. Audio you own, public-domain recordings and Creative Commons licensed work are generally fine, and many countries allow personal copies under fair use or fair dealing. Downloading copyrighted music instead of buying or streaming it is not permitted, and YouTube's own terms restrict downloading.
