Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?
Divide the room area by the area of one tile (including grout joint). Then add your waste percentage (typically 10%) to cover cuts at edges, corners, and breakage. This calculator does all of that automatically.
What waste percentage should I use for tiles?
Use 10% for simple square rooms with no obstacles. Use 15% for rooms with diagonal patterns, many cuts around fixtures, or complex shapes. Use 20% for large-format tiles (60cm+) where cuts waste more material per tile.
What grout width should I enter?
Standard ceramic/porcelain tiles: 2–3mm grout joints. Large format tiles (60cm+): 3–5mm. Natural stone: 3–6mm. Rectified tiles can use 1–2mm. Check the tile manufacturer’s recommendation for the specific tile you are using.
Should I order extra tiles?
Always order at least 10% extra and keep a few boxes from the same batch after installation. Tile colour varies between production batches (called dye lots). If a tile cracks or chips years later, tiles from a different batch may not match.
How do I estimate tiles for an L-shaped room?
Split the L-shape into two rectangles, calculate each separately using this estimator, then add the totals together and add your waste percentage once on the combined total.
Is this tile estimator free?
Completely free. Enter your dimensions, get your tile count instantly.
